In Focus: Tagliafaco could be an exciting solution to Benitez’s left-back problem

As reported by the Evening Chronicle, Newcastle United are interested in signing Argentina interntional Nicolas Tagliafico before the transfer window shuts this week.

What’s the story?

With Paul Dummett out for months with a hamstring injury and the Magpies lacking adequate natural back-up at left-back, the race is on for the club to complete a defensive deal before the transfer window shuts.

The Evening Chronicle reckon that one man on Rafa Benitez’s shortlist for the position is Independiente defender Nicolas Tagliafeco.

The 24-year-old, rated at £4m by Transfermarkt, plays predominately on the left hand side of defence but can also fill in at centre-back, providing Benitez value and versatility.

Who is he?

While not a household name in England, Tagliafeco has been making a name for himself in his homeland, emerging as one of the best left-backs in Argentina.

He has close to 170 professional appearances to his name at Banfield, Spanish club Murcia and Independiente, experience that would allow him to slot right into Benitez’s first-team without much issue.

Having represented Argentina at three youth levels, the defender made his senior debut for the national team this summer, playing in a 1-0 win over arch rivals Brazil in June. With the prospect of becoming a regular for an elite international side, Newcastle could be getting something special at a bargain price.

At the very least he’d be a signing fans can get excited about, that classic unknown signing from South America that could turn out magical or dreadul!
