According to reports in The Independent, north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are ready go head-to-head to sign Manchester City starlet Jadon Sancho after talks over a new contract broke down, throwing his future into doubt.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Independent says that Sancho is rated as one of the brightest young talents in the City academy and he had been expected to be included in Pep Guardiola’s squad for their pre-season trip to America.

However, the 17-year-old winger was left at home because he has still failed to commit his future to the club, according to The Independent, even though he has been offered a three-year £30,000-a-week deal.

The report adds that the player believes he could have a quicker pathway to the first team with another club, and both Spurs and the Gunners are long-term admirers and are keen to bring him back down south – he previously played youth football for Watford before moving to the Etihad in 2015.

Sancho currently has one year left on his scholarship and if he were to leave this summer City would be due between £3-4m in compensation, according to The Independent, although they remain confident that won't happen.

How did Sancho do last season?

The 17-year-old made 35 appearances in all competitions for the Under-18, Under-23 and UEFA Under-19 sides, scoring 20 goals and providing a further eight assists.

He was particularly impressive in the Under-18 Premier League, finding the net 12 times in just 14 outings for the young Citizens.

The quick winger is brilliant at dribbling and a menace to defenders, while he has shown with his goal record that he is pretty lethal when it comes to putting the ball into the back of the net as well.

Would he be a good signing for Tottenham/Arsenal?

As one for the future, he certainly would be.

Sancho looks to be a hugely talented forward and if either north London club was able to sign him it would be seen as a huge coup, especially for a compensation fee which could be as little as £3m.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, unless City can guarantee that Sancho will get his first team opportunity sooner rather than later then it appears as though he won’t sign a new deal, and a move back down to London could be a tempting one as Tottenham and Arsenal circle.
