Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld could be the target of a late swoop from Inter Milan, according to Corriere dello Sport.

What's the story?

The 28-year-old has been linked to the Serie A outfit in the past, but speculation had quietened.

The rumour surrounds Alderweireld's contract situation at the North London club, with talkSPORT claiming that both parties are struggling to reach an agreement on terms for a new deal.

The news comes after Danny Rose's public criticism of Tottenham in an interview with the Sun, in which the left-back suggested that he and some of his teammates are not earning the salaries that they deserve.

Due to contract talks reportedly stalling between Alderweireld and Spurs, Italian giants Inter have been alerted and are considering a late swoop, according to Corriere dello Sport.

The transfer window closes on August 31 next week.

What should Tottenham do?

Mauricio Pochettino has been one of the quietest Premier League managers in the transfer window this summer.

His club have yet to bring in a new signing, but Sky Sports claims that they are closing in on the capture of Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez.

Following the departure of Kyle Walker to Manchester City, it is imperative that Spurs keep hold of their first-team stars; Alderweireld being one of them.

The Belgian has formed a decent partnership at the back with Jan Vertonghen, and both have started together in the first two league matches of the season.

The fairly modest wage structure seems to be an issue bubbling under the surface, and it will be Spurs' fault if they end up losing the defender because of money.
