As reported in an exclusive by The Sun, Manchester United are extremely interested in Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier and could make a move for him this summer.
Dier has had an up and down season in a Spurs shirt having been asked to perform a variety of roles at White Hart Lane, but despite patchy form, clubs are already preparing to sign him in the summer.
That’s according to The Sun who say that Jose Mourinho is a massive fan of the England international and even contemplated making a move for him in the January transfer window.
Mauricio Pochettino is said to be keen to hold on to Dier but that hasn’t stopped United considering a bid.
A Man United source revealed to The Sun:
United are interested in Dier, and looked at making a move for him in the January transfer window. Obviously that didn’t come off, but Mourinho has him on a list of targets for the summer. He likes him. Tottenham do not want to sell him under any circumstances, but you never know what can happen when the money is on the table.
That means there could be an interesting summer ahead for fans of both clubs as United look to build a team capable of winning the title.
Eric Dier is undoubtedly one of England’s top talents but this season has struggled with the responsibility of featuring in the centre of defence for Spurs. If he’s unable to cope with the pressure of defending at White Hart Lane then he’s unlikely to be up for performing a similar role at United.
If the Red Devils do make their move then deploying him in midfield as a potential replacement for Carrick would make more sense. He has the technical and passing ability to be a great success in that position but also the defensive chops to play the role of a midfield spoiler.
At just 23 years old, there’s clear room for him to improve too.
