In Focus: Wijnaldum would be an expensive squad option for Real Madrid

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato WebReal Madrid could make a surprise move for Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum this summer as a potential alternative to Chelsea star Eden Hazard.

What’s the word?

Well, the report suggests Los Blancos are keen on Hazard, though top brass in west London are said to be optimistic in their hopes of keeping the player at Stamford Bridge.

With that in mind, Dutch international Wijnaldum is understood to have emerged as a shock target in the Spanish capital. Indeed, TMW claim there has ALREADY been a meeting between the player’s agent and the Champions League holders as they eye midfield reinforcements.

Is he really good enough?

Not to start. Still, the former Newcastle United man can operate in a number of different positions, thriving in attacking berths under Steve McClaren during his early days in black and white, while his deployment in central midfield at Anfield has seemingly worked wonders.

If Madrid really are keen on the 26-year-old, it’d be hard to see Liverpool being able to stave off any concrete interest. However, considering the fact he only joined the Reds last summer, any deal to take him to the Santiago Bernabeu would likely to be very expensive, for a player who’d presumably only act as a squad option for Real.
