The winter transfer window is coming up fast and Rafael Benitez will be working hard to organise significant and efficient business in a very important window on the blue half of Merseyside.
Not only will the Spaniard be seeking to add talent in key areas of the team, he could be looking to offload some players who are not part of his vision at Goodison Park as he attempts to free up funds to comply with FFP rules.
Jonjoe Kenny is one player who will be out of contract in the summer, and with his lack of game-time for the Toffees, it looks likely that he will be on the manager’s list of players to axe in the New Year.
The 24-year-old was sent out on loan to Celtic last February and failed to make a good impression, especially in the Old Firm fixture in April, where his performance was branded a ‘horror show’ by Celtic podcaster Paul John Dykes.
It looks likely that not even being a Liverpool native could save Kenny from being moved on from his £15k-p/w contract, but being young and playing in a position with few contenders, there’s a good chance that Everton could easily offload the right back at the right price, to benefit both parties involved.
The Toffees have huge fixtures coming up over the next month, including Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City.
Benitez will be hoping to pick up points where possible from such illustrious opposition with his current crop of players, and these testing fixtures will be an ideal opportunity for the Spaniard to take a good look at those squad members who could be fighting for their Goodison Park futures.
With Kenny’s SofaScore rating of 6.70 putting him 16th in the list of 22 Everton players to feature in the Premier League this term, and the manager showing little faith in him so far, this would suggest that the 24-year-old may not be of the standard that Benitez is demanding.
