According to Tutto Mercato, Manchester City have joined Liverpool in the race to sign Napoli full-back Faouzi Ghoulam.
With new signing Benjamin Mendy facing a spell on the sidleines through injury, it has been reported that Manchester City have joined the race to sign Algerian left-back Faouzi Ghoulam, who Liverpool are already rumoured to be interested in.
Both Premier League clubs are keen to strengthen the left-back position for very different reasons. Manchester City would like short-term cover for the aforementioned Mendy, while it is no secret that Liverpool are in dire need of a proven player on the left side of their defence.
Rumours surrounding Ghoulam’s future with Napoli have been particularly hot this week, after an agent revealed that the 26-year-old is unlikely to extend his contract with the Serie A club, which runs out in the summer.
The agent in question, Mario Giuffredi stated;
“I don’t think Ghoulam will renew with Napoli, and it’s enough to think that in four months he’ll be able to sign for whoever he wants for nothing.
“He could earn €5m and if I were his agent I’d do that, and I don’t think the others are stupid. I don’t believe these stories that Ghoulam wants to renew, if he wanted to renew he’d already have done it.”
It seems that Pep Guardiola’s insatiable search for full-back options is back, especially after Benjamin Mendy’s unfortunate injury has ruled him out for a number of months.
However, with Fabian Delph proving that he can cover in the position with great success and Ghoulam, who has 35 caps for Algeria, likely wanting assurances of a first team place, even upon Mendy’s return, a move to Anfield might be more likely for the Algerian.
