Newcastle United are one of a handful of clubs interested in signing Arsenal defender Calum Chambers, according to The Gambling Times.

What's the word?

The Magpies are believed to be keen to strengthen their defensive options for the upcoming Premier League season, and Chambers is one particular target.

The Gambling Times claim that Everton and Bournemouth are also interested in the 22-year-old's signature.

In addition, Southampton, who sold him to Arsenal for £16m three years ago, are rumoured to be keen to spend £20m on bringing him back.

Since moving to the Emirates, Chambers has struggled for consistency and spent the majority of last season on loan at Middlesbrough.

It is believed that he will hold talks about his Arsenal future with the North London club following the Under-21 European Championships.

Is Chambers the right fit for Newcastle?

The fact that he has struggled to fully establish himself in a Premier League team is a concern.

The England U21 international also flits from full-back to the centre of defensive, and it is not quite certain where his best position is yet.

From the player's point of view, he should be at a club where he can hone his skills and develop.

Ordinarily, Newcastle would be a good club to do so, but Rafael Benitez's side main priority will be remaining in the top flight, so it would be wise for him to strengthen the back line with a more experienced player.
