According to ESPN, Phil Jones could be set for a new contract at Manchester United, with discussion already underway.
Following an impressive start to the season, Phil Jones is set to be awarded a new contract that could make him one of the highest played defenders in the Premier League.
Jones’ current contract runs until 2019, with the option of a further year. However, it looks as though Jose Mourinho is happy to offer the 25-year-old, who is valued at £12.6million by Transfermarkt, a new long-term deal.
If you were to ask Manchester United fans last season to guess who their star defender would be come the 2017/18 campaign, it is unlikely that many would have said Phil Jones.
The Englishman struggled with fitness and a lack of form in 2016/17 and many thought his days at Old Trafford may be numbered.
However, Jones has re-found the form that made him one of the most exciting young talents in English football when United signed him in 2011.
Again, based on Jones’s performances since the new season started, a new contract is totally deserved. He has outshone a number of opposition attackers and looks a calm, composed and more importantly, consistent figure at the heart of United’s defence.
Whether he deserves a contract that would make him one of the highest paid defenders in the Premier League is another question. However, if the former Blackburn star can continue his vein of form, he could be one of the more valuable players at the club over the next few years.
