Wayne Rooney will not be leaving Manchester United before the end of the season, manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed.

What's the latest?

January tends to be a relatively quiet window with regards to high-profile players moving around, but there were rumblings that Wayne Rooney may end his 13-year stay at Old Trafford.

The club captain has had limited game time under Mourinho this season, starting just eight Premier League games.

Last week, The Sun reported that Rooney was considering quitting United for a lucrative move to the Chinese Super League after some clubs offered him staggering wages of around £1m a week.

The newspaper claimed that after becoming the Red Devils' all-time leading scorer with 250 goals, Rooney now feels ready to move on.

However, in Tuesday's press conference, Mourinho told reporters that his skipper, as well as Ashley Young, will still be at the club by the end of the season.

Will this call an end to the Rooney rumours?

Doubtful. Everything can change in just a few hours when it comes to football.

It is worth keeping in mind that the transfer window does not close until February 28, so Rooney could still make the jump over to the Far East.

As it stands, though, he is unlikely to do so, maybe because he wants a proper send-off given the service that he has provided to United all these years.

What is clear is that the 31-year-old will not figure as a regular starter  under Mourinho and is likely to continue having a bit-part role.

At his age, Rooney will be deliberating on how to end the final few years of his career, and perhaps get his last big financial boost, so a transfer might be revisited in the summer.
