Transfer Focus: Conte set to swing the axe and flog Matic

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte could sell Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic this summer as he looks to continue the overhaul of his title winning squad, according to reports from The Express.

What’s the word?

The Chelsea boss is looking to assemble a side ready to take on the Champions League after winning the Premier League title in his first season and, whilst additions will be key to that, there will have to be some sacrifices.

Whilst Matic, who scored a thumping effort to round off the Blues’ FA Cup semi-final win over rivals Tottenham at Wembley Stadium, has impressed this season he could well be on his way out of Stamford Bridge.

Conte has been heavily linked with a move for Monaco star Tiemoue Bakayoko, meaning it is likely that he will have to sell off one of his current midfielders, and the tabloid believe Matic is the most likely to go.

Where to?

There seem to be a couple of early options. The Express go on to claim that Juventus boss Max Allegri is determined to add some mettle to his midfield in Turin this summer and is looking at a deal for the Premier League champion.

However, there could be a much more tantilising offer on the table for the 28-year-old.

Former manager Jose Mourinho, who brought Matic back to the club in 2014 having been sold to Benfica by the west Londoners in 2011, is interested in a reunion at Old Trafford as he looks to find a successor to Michael Carrick.

Juventus would be tough to turn down, and would be the choice of officials at Chelsea, however, a betting man would have his money on an Old Trafford move.
