Transfer Focus: Could Matic make Man United move?

Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic is keen on a reunion with former manager Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, despite having just won the Premier League title with Chelsea, according to reports from the Manchester Evening News.

What’s the word?

The Serbian, who picked up his second Premier League winners medal in three years this term, has been back to his best under Antonio Conte after an alarmingly poor campaign the season prior, however, is supposedly keen to work under Mourinho again.

A deal for the 28-year-old, rated at £29.75m. now lies solely with the two clubs after his intentions were reportedly laid out in talks over a move to Old Trafford.

Whilst the industrious midfielder has enjoyed a good season, the return of Cesc Fabregas to top form and the rumours of a summer move for Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko could be troubling.

Why go back?

It was quite clear that something went horribly wrong with Mourinho and his Chelsea players in a season which saw the Special One sacked and the Blues finish tenth. Many of the playing staff performed well off the mark and Matic was arguably one of the worst offenders. Why, then, would he reunite with Mourinho?

The Portuguese was the man to bring Matic back to Stamford Bridge having been sold by the club to Benfica in 2011.

Upon his return to west London in 2014, the Serb was crucial in landing the Premier League title in his first season and will hold the 14/15 campaign as his best in a Chelsea shirt, with his form largely down to a strong relationship with the manager.

Therefore, whilst Conte may not be 100% sold on the midfielder, and with Mourinho in need of one, it would make sense to start working together once again.
