Monaco defender Benjamin Mendy is close to completing a move to Manchester City having won the Ligue 1 title with the principality side, according to reports from French journalist Romain Collet-Gaudin, snubbing interest from a crop of top Premier League sides in doing so.
The 22-year-old, who has also been linked with Manchester United, Liverpool and champions Chelsea ahead of the summer window, looks set to be either the second or third signing of the summer after Bernardo Sliva and, potentially, Brazilian goal-keeper Ederson.
The left-back played a key role in helping Monaco win the French league for the first time in 17 years, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League under the guise of manager Leonardo Jardim, setting up five goals in the League as well as another four on the continent.
However, it is far from a stretch to suggest that, despite all their success, it looks as if Jardim’s young side will be torn apart this summer with, as well as Silva and Mendy, the likes of Mbappe, Fabinho and Bakayoko will all be considered targets for some of Europe’s top clubs.
Should Guardiola add both Ederson and Mendy to the list of players signed less than two weeks after the end of his first season then it would appear there would be little left to do.
However, it seems that the Spaniard is hell bent on a complete overhaul of his squad as he looks to bring the average age down.
It would not be a surprise to see another striker or forward arrive through the doors at The Etihad as well as a right-back on the other side of the back four and potentially a centre-half in the middle.
It may seem excessive, however, if Guardiola wants to compete on all fronts next season, which of course he will, then depth is the key.
