According to Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United are one of three clubs whose bids for Andre Gomes has been rebuffed by Barcelona.
According to the report from Spain, Gomes’ agent Jorge Mendes held talks with Barcelona about three offers that have been tabled by Manchester United, Juventus and either Tottenham or Arsenal.
However, Barcelona are reported to have rebuffed the offers, claiming that they aren’t quite ready to cash in on the midfielder yet.
Frankly, a disappointment. The Portuguese star feature 43 times for Barcelona in all competitions during his first season with the club but never really showed the talent that was expected when the club signed the 23-year-old from Valencia.
Granted, Gomes was given the arduous task of trying to fill the shoes of the departed Xavi, one of Barcelona’s all-time greats. However, even without the consideration of this burden, Gomes was regularly under par and was often cited as one of the key players in Barcelona’s failure to win any silverware last season.
Despite winning the League Cup and Europa League in his first season as United boss, Jose Mourinho is thought to be keen on injecting some serious talent into his squad this summer. The arrival of Victor Lindelof from Benfica is projected to be the first of many new faces heading through the Old Trafford doors ahead of the new campaign.
A central-midfielder is thought to be one of the key areas where Mourinho wants to improve his team, and Andre Gomes, who has 23 caps for Portugal, would certainly do that. The Portuguese star is still young, hungry and clearly has the talent.
However, he must significantly improve on last season’s performances if he joins Manchester United. The fans will want an immediate return for a likely astronomical transfer fee and the 23-year-old must provide this.
