According to The Daily Star, Newcastle have been told to improve their offer for Sporting defender Ruben Semedo.
On Thursday morning, O Jogo reported that Newcastle were close to signing the 23-year-old, but The Star believe the Magpies have been told to improve their offer after failing with a £17million bid – despite Transfermarkt valuing him at just £5.95million.
Newcastle are rumoured to have been chasing the Portuguese star for a number of weeks, with reports from Semedo’s homeland surfacing as early as May 13th. However, it appears they haven’t got a deal over the line just yet.
In his first season as a regular feature in the Sporting side, Semedo has impressed with his unique combination of elegant athleticism and fiery physicality.
However, what is bound to have caught the attention of a number of teams around Europe is Semedo’s passing ability, which is seemingly essential for the “modern” centre-half.
The young star is extrememly capable with the ball at his feet and is often used as the catalyst for a number of offensive scenarios; finding his way into midfield before passing eloquently to a teammate.
With Grant Hanley not having played in the Premier League for a number of years, Jamal Lacelles still young and inexperienced and Chancel Mbemba proving a disaster in his last appearance in the top flight, Newcastle will undoubtedly need to improve their defensive options this summer.
While Ruben Semedo is an exceptionally promising player, should Newcastle not be looking for defenders with more Premier League experience than those already on their books?
With only one season of regular top flight football under his belt, Semedo may initially struggle to get to grips with the demands of the Premier League.
