According to Tutto Murcato, Tottenham are interested in signing Matias Vecino from Fiorentina, if Eric Dier leaves for pastures new.

What’s the Word?

Reports in Italy have suggested that Mauricio Pochettino is eyeing a move for Uruguayan midfielder Matias Vecino, potentially as a replacement for Eric Dier, who has been linked to a number of European clubs.

While no discussions have taken place and no valuation has been placed on Vecino, the 25-year-old isn’t likely to come cheap as his current contract with Fiorentina runs until 2021. Transfermarkt estimate the player’s current market valuation at £11.05million.

How good was Vecino last season?

2016/17 was a real breakthrough year for Vecino. The Uruguayan played 40 times in all competitions for Fiorentina, scoring four goals and contributing to the team with five assists. However, what truly caught the eye of watching scouts was his development in a defensive midfield role. Vecino helped sure up the Fiorentina defence, which has been notoriously leaky in recent years and became a vital member of the team.

Would Vecino be a good fit for Spurs?

While Mauricio Pochettino isn’t one for signing players on a whim, bringing Vecino to Spurs would seem like an out of the ordinary move for the Argentinean boss. Granted, the 25-year-old has had a markedly impressive season but taking gambles on players after one good season hasn’t historically worked for Spurs; Benjamin Stambouli, Moussa Sissoko and Roberto Soldado are all examples of this.

However, if Pochettino is looking to buy Vecino to add to squad depth and not as a first team regular, then it may prove a fruitful piece of business.
