United’s move for Marco Asensio could unlock massive potential

As reported by The Daily Star, Manchester United are interested in Real Madrid fringe player Marco Asensio, but will have to pay big money to land their man.

What’s the story?

You’d expect Jose Mourinho to do serious business this summer as he continues to transform his side from Premier League also-rans into title contenders once again.

One man on his radar is Real Madrid star Marco Asensio, according to The Star.

They reckon that the young midfielder is one of Mourinho’s top targets in the next transfer window. However, it’ll cost them, with Real Madrid expecting a fee exceeding £40m for the 21 year old.

The Red Devils also face significant competition from the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal if they’re to land their man, according to the paper.

Worth it?

Asensio has been a bit part player for Real Madrid this season but there’s no shame to that when you consider the massive world class stars ahead of him in the pecking order.

He’s performed when been asked by Zinedine Zidane, scoring three goals in the six starts he’s had for the club so far this term.

Getting a full season of first team football under his belt at Espanyol in La Liga did him the world of good in 2015/16 and if he doesn’t leave Madrid, he’s been tipped to play a starring role for them in the future.

He also already has two international caps for Spain, highlighting how important they see him to the national set-up in years to come as well.

It’s mostly potential that Manchester United would be buying then but what a potential he has. If Mourinho can invest early in his talent then the reported £40m could well turn out to be a bargain.
