West Ham United defender Winston Reid will be offered a new contract at the end of the season, according to The Sun.

What's the word?

The New Zealand international still has four years left on his current deal, but it is believed that manager Slaven Bilic wants to reward him.

Reid has been with the Hammers for the past seven years since joining from Midtjylland and he has emerged as a key central defender.

The Sun reports that the East London outfit are prepared to give Reid £70,000 a week, which matches the wages given to January signing Jose Fonte.

The publication adds that his current £15m release clause will be increased to £20m in an attempt to warn off any suitors.

Is it deserved?

In a word, yes. Reid has been a reliable and solid defender for the Hammers for a number of years.

Fonte's arrival has only improved the New Zealander's form and it makes perfect sense for him to be offered a salary boost and an extended deal.

It has not been the most enjoyable of seasons for the Hammers since moving to the London Stadium.

The team picked up just one Premier League victory in the first two months of the season, and have only claimed a further eight wins in 29 fixtures.

Bilic's men currently sit 12th in the table, and even though they have let 52 goals ship past them, Reid has been a leader at the back.

The centre-back is currently sidelined with an injury, joining Michail Antonio, Pedro Obiang and Diafra Sakho on the treatment table.
