West Brom will have to sell players before they can add to their squad this summer, football finance expert Kieran Maguire has warned.

The Baggies were relegated at the end of the recently concluded Premier League season and will now be due parachute payments. But, even so, Maguire is certain that they will still need to get rid of some of their playing staff.

The above could include Matheus Pereira and Sam Johnstone, who both continue to attract plenty of Premier League interest.

Aston Villa are said to be just one team who are currently looking at the Brazilian, while his English team-mate has been linked with a return to former club Manchester United.

Speaking about what lies ahead for West Brom this summer, Maguire told FFC:

"I still think that potentially [West Brom] will have to sell before they can buy because they will have quite a few players on big contracts that aren't really sustainable if they didn't have any financial support in the Championship."

It is now looking certain that both Pereira and Johnstone will be leaving the Hawthorns this transfer window. And given the club's predicament after a disappointing 2020/21 campaign, you would expect more to follow them.
