After securing a 1-0 win over Hull City on Wednesday thanks to a second half strike from Karlan Grant, West Bromwich Albion are back in action again on Saturday, with a home clash against Middlesbrough next up for Valerien Ismael's side in the Championship.

In terms of which players Ismael could select in his starting XI to take on Neil Warnock's side, who head into tomorrow's game with 21 points on the board in 14th place in the table, we feel that one player who started in midweek but should not be in the XI to face Middlesbrough is Matt Phillips.

Why Phillips must be dropped

During the win in midweek, the Scotland international failed to register a shot on target, made just 13 passes, misplaced all seven of his crosses, lost possession 12 times and failed to make even one defensive contribution such as a tackle, interception or clearance before being taken off in the 63rd minute to be replaced by striker Jordan Hugill.

This latest performance earned the 30-year-old, who is currently valued at £3.6m by Transfermarkt, an overall match rating of 6.9/10, making him one of the lowest-rated West Brom players to start the match in midweek according to SofaScore, highlighting how much of a flop he was for the team in an attacking and defensive sense.

In additon, when looking at his season in the Championship on the whole, having appeared in all of their league games to date, Phillips has only managed to rack up an overall pass accuracy percentage of 64% per game with just 36% of duels won. It's safe to say that, despite being a regular figure for the Baggies, he's not had the best of seasons so far.

Taking this into account, and the fact that he has not registered a goal or assist for the Baggies since netting in their 4-0 win over Cardiff City back in September, we feel that West Brom would have a better chance of securing all three points against Middlesbrough if Phillips is taken out of the starting XI tomorrow.
