For a lot of people, this will be the first time football has been delayed in England in their lifetime.

However, if you ask your grandparents about the 1962/63 season, they’re likely to tell you the story of the big freeze, when football was called off for months due to arctic-like temperatures gripping the UK.

Football was endangered for three months, and such drastic measures were made such as Halifax’s Shay Stadium being turned into a public ice rink.

Eventually, the sport was resumed, but as you can imagine, that season didn’t quite pan out in the same way as every other campaign.

The powers that be decided that the season still had to be concluded by mid-May and this led to the most insane fixture congestion you could imagine.

For example, take a look at Liverpool’s fixtures in the back-end of that term.

The Reds played five games in eight days at one point in mid-April, and if that same protocol is followed this season it will have a huge effect on teams as fatigue and tiredness will set in.

One team that are nicely set up for this eventuality is West Bromwich Albion.

The Baggies have a big squad with a lot of depth, just look up front, their third choice striker was an £8m signing, while they also have four talented wingers, Kyle Edwards, Matheus Pereira, Callum Robinson and Grady Diangana who can easily be rotated.

Gareth Barry, Rekeem Harper and Chris Brunt provide good depth in the middle of the park, while this delay could allow Nathan Ferguson to return to fitness and provide more options at the back too where they have a plethora of central defenders in their ranks.

If the FA choose to copy the same protocol they used over 50 years ago, the Midlands club could be set up to go on and get promotion. Their strength in depth is pretty-much unmatched throughout this division, and that will be key from now until the end of the season.

In other news, West Brom may be impacted if the Championship runs until July.
