West Bromwich Albion's quest to land a new striker has taken an interesting twist this weekend but it's one that should strike fear down the spines of supporters at the Hawthorns...

What's the word?

According to The Sun's Alan Nixon, the Baggies are in talks to sign Rennes forward M'Baye Niang on loan before the transfer deadline but the two clubs appear some way off agreeing over a fee.

Slaven Bilic's side could turn the temporary move into a permanent one should they stave off relegation this campaign.

Albion have also been linked with a move for Huddersfield Town talisman Karlan Grant as well as Watford duo Troy Deeney and Andre Gray.

Risky business

Luke Dowling would certainly be playing with fire if he opts to sign Niang over any of the other three strikers mentioned above as his one venture into the Premier League was quite the disaster during a loan spell at Watford.

The 25-year-old bagged just two goals in 16 appearances for the Hornets back in 16/17 and has always been quite the controversial figure on and off the pitch.

He's previously been compared to Mario Balotelli with The Sun slamming his off-field misdemeanours, which includes fighting, car crashes and daring stunts.

This sort of controversy hasn't been seen in the west Midlands since the signing of Nicolas Anelka back in 14/15 and it's not something that Bilic will want amongst his current squad whatsoever.

Despite being only 25, Niang has already racked up seven clubs during his professional career and evidently, has never been able to settle down at one team, so a move back to the PL doesn't really make any sense whatsoever.

Now valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, Dowling and the Baggies ought to swerve this move at all costs.
