West Bromwich Albion have been relatively quiet on the transfer front this season, with financial difficulties clearly a big issue plaguing the club.

Steve Bruce was limited to a summer window based predominantly around free transfers, and throughout the season there have been few links circulating regarding future plans.

That perhaps could have been attributed to their miserable league position, with more pressing matters worrying the hierarchy at the club.

However, since the appointment of Carlos Corberan, it seems that their red-hot form has kicked the rumour mill back into gear.

In keeping with their frugal transfer policy, one rumour emerged just over a week ago linking the Baggies with a loan move for an Aston Villa starlet.

They are poised to battle with Norwich City for the pleasure of hosting Lamare Bogarde at their respective clubs, with the 18-year-old having recently broken into the club’s Premier League 2 side.

Having featured at defensive midfield, the Dutchman is predominantly a centre-back. However, it is this stint in midfield which will likely have aided him in his progression as a modern defender, giving him the qualities needed to succeed.

Therefore, the 6-foot starlet could draw comparisons with his compatriot Virgil van Dijk for his powerful presence matched with technical superiority.

This is no greater exemplified than in Gregg Evans’ report for The Athletic, where he claims: “The youngster is calm and composed in possession and likes to play out from the back.”

A statement such as this could directly have applied to the 31-year-old, who was integral in Liverpool’s short period of domination.

Michael Owen even claimed: “I think he’s the best centre half of all time”, with Paul Merson dubbing Van Dijk “Rolls-Royce”.

Having already made one appearance for the senior squad despite his youth, it is clear Bogarde is well thought of at Villa Park.

Despite this move only being a six-month loan, securing him for a short period could provide a platform for a permanent deal in the future should he be deemed surplus to requirements by Unai Emery.

This could potentially see the “immense potential” that was touted by academy manager Mark Harrison realised at the Hawthorns.

Although it may be hopeful, securing this initial loan deal could be the first step in enticing this rising star.

Cut from the same cloth as Van Dijk, in terms of position on the pitch, nationality and tendencies, it would be a superb deal for Albion to get across the line.
