West Brom are keen on signing Mbaye Diagne this January transfer window, according to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas.
He claims that the Galatasaray forward is potentially available on loan with an option to buy should the Baggies survive in the Premier League this season.
And so they should, his arrival could be a game-changer for their season.
The 29-year-old has been a prolific figure wherever he’s been throughout his career – this term, he’s already notched nine goals in 15 appearances, so perhaps it is a surprise to see him free to leave this month.
Indeed, those nine attempts have taken his total tally in the Super Lig to 51 goals in 64 appearances, whilst in spells at Club Brugge (four in nine), Tianjin (15 in 45), Ujpest (11 in 16) and Lierse (seven in 11), he has proven his exploits, via Transfermarkt.
This all bodes well for a potential switch to a new division such as the Premier League as he’s regularly found the net across Belgium, China, Hungary and Turkey, which isn’t an easy feat to achieve.
Diagne’s former teammate at Kasimpasa, Trezeguet, joined local rivals Aston Villa 18 months ago and he believes the 6 foot 4 powerhouse would thrive in England, the Galatasaray forward revealed to the Guardian:
“We talk regularly and he keeps saying I would thrive in England. I’m big and strong, I can hold up the ball and lay it off, I’m good in the air and I’m a finisher.”
If he were to complete the move and continue his goalscoring form, then it could be argued that he’d be Albion’s best signing since Matheus Pereira.
The Brazilian playmaker has undoubtedly been one of Albion’s most influential players having scored 13 goals and provided 23 assists in only 59 appearances per Transfermarkt.
No other player can match close to that in the same timeframe at the Baggies.
Given that Sam Allardyce’s men are the fourth-worst in the top-flight for goals scored, a new striker is certainly needed, even more so with Karlan Grant on the treatment table.
Diagne can fill that void and if he steers the club to safety, then maybe he’d be an even bigger hero than Pereira. For now, we’ll have to wait and see West Brom can secure a deal before February 1st.
