West Ham United had a rather disappointing return to Premier League action over the weekend after losing 2-0 to Brentford away from home.

As well as the disheartening result, the east London club were also dealt another blow on Sunday that could have a big impact on their upcoming Europa League clash against Lyon on Thursday.

What's the news?

With 29 minutes on the clock, Hammers defender Kurt Zouma was forced off the pitch with a suspected injury, allowing Issa Diop to play through the remainder of the match.

Speaking after the clash, David Moyes had this to say on the matter.

"Kurt has twisted his ankle. We don’t know how bad it is. We’ll get him checked. Coming off is not a good sign but hopefully, it’s not too bad."

The Evening Standard reports that the Frenchman will have a scan on his ankle today (Monday) to assess the seriousness of the situation and whether or not he will be available to play against Lyon.

Moyes will be sweating

With a higher average of clearances per game (5.7) than any other Hammers player as well as the second-highest average of blocks per game (1.1) the centre-back is certainly an important figure for West Ham at the back.

He has also racked up the third-highest pass success percentage (86.5%) out of any player in Moyes' squad to have started at least one league game in this campaign, showing just how capable the defender is on the ball as well as off it with his defensive talents.

The 27-year-old has also been a solid figure for his club in the Europa League as well, earning himself an overall performance rating of 7.13, the third-highest of any player to have featured in the competition for the east London club this season according to WhoScored.

Taking this into account, it's safe to say that Moyes and many Hammers fans will be sweating over this latest injury blow and whether or not he'll be available to feature in midweek.

For the time being, it seems as though everyone at the east London club will have to wait until the results of the scan come back to see exactly what the situation is.

Until then, it could be a worrying period for the Irons in the lead-up to one of their biggest games of the season.
