West Ham United: Moyes could reignite Gianluca Scamacca with Terem Moffi swoop

West Ham United have identified a new striking target and could look to meet his valuation this month…

What’s the latest?

That’s according to journalist Ignazio Genuardi, who took to Twitter to update followers about the Irons’ January transfer plans.

After referencing the club’s unsuccessful attempts to lure Youssef En-Nesyri, he claimed that David Moyes is now looking closely at Nigerian forward Terem Moffi of Lorient.

With Southampton having already made the first offer, which was rejected, it remains to be seen whether any prospective suitor will meet the £25m price tag that his club have attached to him.

Reignite Scamacca

This is a move which could improve West Ham’s attack substantially, not just by bringing in another young and potentially lethal frontman but also providing ample competition which could get Gianluca Scamacca flying once more.

The Italian moved to the London Stadium for a mouth-watering £35.5m transfer fee last summer, having scored 16 goals for Sassuolo in 2021/22. However, since that move, it is fair to say that the 24-year-old has somewhat disappointed.

Touted to be the natural successor to Michail Antonio, the 6 foot 5 titan has just three goals in 15 appearances in the Premier League, and as such has forced Moyes to field his 32-year-old team-mate on two more occasions than him up to this point of the campaign.

Perhaps the burden of replacing the club’s all-time Premier League top scorer is proving too much for the hulking striker, who could benefit from the possible emergence of Moffi.

The 23-year-old has 11 goals in just 17 Ligue 1 appearances this term, already surpassing last season’s tally of just eight. He seems to be improving with each passing year, and the future seems very bright for this clinical youngster.

Should West Ham sign another striker?

No

His rate of 0.53 non-penalty goals per 90 minutes is a testament to his immense quality for his age, as he ranks in the top 14% amongst strikers in Europe’s top five leagues over the past year.

Bringing in another young sensation from a big European league may seem destined to repeat the Scamacca blunder, but in fact it could be that commonality between the two strikers which might help both of them acclimatise.

His manager at Lorient clearly thinks highly of him, as Christophe Pelissier said following Moffi’s first international call-up for Nigeria: “Terem is a man of gold. It’s amazing the state of mind this player has. He ticks all the boxes of the high-level player.”

Should he make the move to the London Stadium and translate his Lorient form to English football, he could not only be imperative in saving West Ham from their precarious situation as they sit just outside the Premier League relegation zone, he could also be the catalyst in finally getting another of their big-money deals off the ground.
