Keeping Dawson was a West Ham masterclass

West Ham looked as if they would let Craig Dawson leave the club on deadline day as Wolves and Aston Villa were heavily linked, but the Hammers decided to keep him in a move which could yet prove to be a masterclass.

A pre-season injury and the signings of Nayef Aguerd and Thilo Kehrer have seen Dawson slip down the pecking order at West Ham, so it was perhaps no surprise to see him linked with a move away.

He looked set to join Wolves on a permanent deal before the move collapsed, as David Moyes then pulled out of a deal for Jan Bednarek from Southampton in favour of keeping the veteran, and it could be a brilliant call from the boss.

Dawson proved with his performances last season just how important he can be for the Hammers, as he featured in 34 Premier League games, while he was also named in the Europa League team of the season after some memorable performances en route to the semi-finals.

He was particularly impressive in the two legs against Olympique Lyon, scoring the opening goal in France as the Hammers progressed, and Mark Noble was full of praise for the experienced defender after that win.

Are you glad Dawson is staying?

He said: “Big Daws, who has been so reliable for us and been fantastic. He was incredible in the first leg and even better tonight so that is a big statement for him.”

Michail Antonio is also a big fan of the former Rochdale man, who has established himself as something of a cult hero amongst fans during his time at the club, earning the nickname Ballon D’awson after his performances last season.

Antonio said: “He’s been unbelievable, he’s been a rock at the back, he’s like an old-school centre-half. He’s tough, he fights, he’s solid, he’s not scared to get down and deep, he’s been quality and he’s been solid for us. He came in not really to play, he’s taken his opportunity, he’s taken his shirt and he’s not giving it up.”

How many points did West Ham end the Premier League season with?

While it is unclear whether he will feature as much this season after West Ham’s summer signings, he is an extremely reliable option for Moyes to have in his squad, and fans will surely be delighted to see him stay, so GSB did well to keep him at the club.
