West Ham eye move for Destiny Udogie

West Ham United are reportedly eyeing a move for Udinese starlet Destiny Udogie.

What’s the word?

That is according to a report from Football Italia, who claimed that David Moyes and co are “closely monitoring” the 19-year-old’s situation.

Should West Ham sign Udogie?

Despite Udogie’s agent meeting with Inter Milan on Tuesday, it is said that the Hammers remain in the race for the teenager and accept Udinese’s stance of wanting at least €20m (£17m) in order to let go of the player.

As per the same report, West Ham are said to be joined in the race by Inter, Juventus and Tottenham.

He’d be a statement signing

Udogie previously enjoyed a fruitful spell at Udinese on loan from Hellas Verona, and as such, the Pozzo-owned club made the move permanent.

Operating as a left wing-back in a three-at-the-back system, he has frequently showcased his attacking ability, with five goals and four assists in 35 Serie A appearances last term.

His form in the Italian top flight has seen him nominated for the 2022 Golden Boy award, with some of Europe’s finest now casting their attention towards the Italy under-21 international.

How many players did West Ham sign during Allardyce's first season in charge?

Quite simply, a move for the 19-year-old would represent a statement of real intent from Moyes, who lacks established depth at full-back and subsequently lacks competition for starting XI mainstay Aaron Cresswell, who played another 31 games in the Premier League alone last season at the age of 32.

At 19, Udogie would provide a much-needed burst of sprite for West Ham in that position. That might not be the only burst he might have to offer – scout reports on the teenager have noted his ‘serious burst of pace’ during his time in Serie A so far.

This appears to be exactly the kind of player that Moyes should be bringing in at the London Stadium, offering a youthful alternative to the vastly experienced Cresswell whilst bolstering competition for places.
