West Ham were linked with signing Brentford striker Ivan Toney during the summer transfer window and the Englishman could have been a big upgrade on Gianluca Scamacca.

The Hammers were one of several Premier League sides said to be interested in signing the 26-year-old forward after an impressive debut season in the top flight that saw Toney contribute 12 goals and five assists in 33 appearances for the Bees, averaging a 7.28 rating from WhoScored.

Toney looks well on track to beat that this season after scoring eight goals in his opening 11 Premier League appearances, so it would perhaps not be a surprise to see some sides reignite their interest in the former Peterborough man during the January transfer window, especially if he goes to the World Cup with England.

After a hat-trick against Leeds United earlier in the season, Simon Jordan was full of praise for Toney on talkSPORT.

He said: “He is an outstanding player. He came into the Premier League with a reputation of being a difficult player to play against because he is unorthodox.

“Forget unorthodox, he is a high-quality player that not only scores goals, but makes goals, he works hard.”

During the summer, a price tag of £50m was touted for Toney which given his performances this season, could have been a steal for the Hammers, especially when you consider that they spent £35.5m on Gianluca Scamacca this summer.

The Italian has shown signs of promise in the Europa Conference League but is so far struggling to have much impact domestically, with just two goals in nine Premier League appearances.

If we compare Toney and Scamacca, the Englishman also has the edge when it comes to possessional play.

Indeed, he has produced more key passes per game (two vs 0.8) and has a better pass success rate (81.8% vs 65.3%). Furthermore, he wins a great more aerials duels per match (two vs 0.7) which suggests that the Englishman is not just a better goalscorer than the Italian - with eight strikes this term - but also a better all-around player.

Given that David Moyes' side currently sit 13th in the Premier League table with just nine goals in the top flight, the Scottish manager would surely have loved someone of Toney's ability in his side.
