Maxwel Cornet is nearing a return to action for West Ham after five months on the sidelines and David Moyes could repeat a tactical masterclass by turning the winger into a striker at the London Stadium.

The Ivory Coast international started impressively in West Ham colours following his £17.5m switch from Burnley in the summer, notching five assists in just nine games, while he was denied his first goal for the club after a controversial VAR call in the defeat against Chelsea.

Last season saw the former Lyon man hit nine Premier League goals for Burnley, with Sean Dyche often utilising the versatile forward as a striker alongside target man Wout Weghorst, and this is something Moyes could take advantage of as he looks to turn the Hammers' goalscoring woes around.

In a recent interview with Claret and Hugh, the Scottish manager said: “I don’t know about pecking order but, where I see him fitting in is that he can do a couple of roles. When you look back to how he played at Burnley, he played a couple of roles, he played almost alongside Wout Weghorst as another striker.”

He later revealed that he thinks Cornet's best position is on the left, but given that the Hammers were one of the lowest scorers in the division before last weekend's 4-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest, something needs to change in the attack.

Wednesday night saw West Ham lose 3-1 to Manchester United, with Michail Antonio highlighting his inadequacies as the sole striker in the Hammers' attack, with the Jamaican seemingly no longer capable of excelling as a Premier League striker.

However, it has arguably been under Moyes that Antonio has shown his best form as a striker in the top flight, hitting ten goals from a central striker position in each of the last three campaigns, having featured as a full-back and winger in his previous spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest.

Like Antonio, the £65k-per-week Cornet is a versatile player with power and pace, and his goalscoring record in the top flight last season certainly suggests that he could do a job in West Ham's attack, as Antonio and summer signing Gianluca Scamacca continue to struggle, with just six top-flight goals between them so far this term.

Alan Shearer labelled Cornet "dangerous" on Match of the Day 2, earlier in the season and there seems no reason why he couldn't follow in the footsteps of Antonio at West Ham if Moyes were to try him out as a striker when he gets back to full fitness.
