West Ham: David Moyes could regret not signing Lazaro

David Moyes made some excellent signings for West Ham United during the summer transfer window, adding in some much-needed quality to bolster his paper-thin squad.

In came seven new arrivals, in addition to Alphonse Areola joining permanently from PSG having spent last season on loan at the club, and the vast majority of the supporters will surely be pleased with the business conducted by the club.

Who did West Ham lose their first league game of the season against?

Despite this success in the window, Moyes may have made a blunder in missing out on a talented Brazilian, especially with the fee involved.

A report from Globe Esporte claimed that West Ham offered £5m for Flamengo player Lazaro but missed out on the player as he joined La Liga side, Almeria, for a £6m fee, which is pocket money in today’s financial climate.

However, West Ham didn’t improve on their opening offer, with it being later revealed that this was due to the club having spent a club-record fee of £51m on Lucas Paqueta, they wanted Lazaro to join on loan rather than up their bid for the 20-year-old.

It could be a big mistake from Moyes to miss out on the tricky left winger as, despite his ever-growing attacking options, adding in the young Brazilian could have paid dividends in terms of a future financial windfall.

He was described as a “brilliant talent” back in 2019 and it looks as though he is on his way to the top, especially with a move to LaLiga.

The Brazilian scored eight goals and registered nine assists in 59 matches for Flamengo, which is a solid return for someone of his age and looking to make a breakthrough.

Lazaro displayed his attacking qualities throughout the 2022 Brasileiro Serie A season, taking an average of 1.4 shots per match and missing a total of seven big chances, meaning he might have scored a lot more than he did and this will come with a growing maturity in his game.

He was successful with 60% of his attempted dribbles, displaying his natural ability on the wing and a desire to constantly take on the opposition defence.

Will West Ham regret missing out on Lazaro?

These are impressive stats for a 20-year-old and he may have developed further with a move to the Premier League.

One thing is for sure, Moyes won’t be able to sign him for a fee in the region of £6m if he decides to move on from Almeria in the future, as his value will surely skyrocket if he continues his upward trajectory in Spain – leading us to believe deciding against a move for the forward could well be one of the 59-year-old’s biggest mistakes to date.
