Insider ExWHUemployee has revealed that West Ham United are considering going overseas to help grow their brand with a foreign summer preseason tour.

What’s the word?

Ahead of the current campaign, the Hammers played a number of friendly fixtures close to home and before that Covid-19 had limited them to trips to England and Scotland.

Interestingly enough, manager David Moyes seems to prefer not to travel long distances for preseason campaigns due to fear of fatigue. Indeed, in the past, Ex claimed he is "very against" such trips.

However, in a new update shared to The West Ham Way Patreon, the club insider revealed that plans are already being put in place for a potential tour of the USA.

He said: “Today we have exclusively heard something that will excite many of our patreons and I’ve tried to get more info on, is a potential foreign summer preseason tour.

"I will hopefully have more information for the podcast as to the location but I know in recent days the club have been in talks about the opportunity.

"The obvious places are South Korea, China or Japan although one of our most recent tours was there. Australia was due to be the venue before Covid with the Hammers visiting Brisbane for two games.

"At the moment though the most likely destination seems to be the USA. There has been talks of 6 teams from the PL going over to play in 2 leagues of 3 teams and then into a knockout stage. These fixtures will be across multiple cities in the USA.

"David Moyes is said to be against long-distance tours but there is every chance he might not be in the manager in the summer and even if he is the club really feel that it is in our long-term benefit to develop our overseas brand, especially in a country where the love of English football is really accelerated."

Expand the brand

At the start of this season, The Athletic reported that some Premier League friendly matches may soon be played in the United States with six teams expected to take part in a mini-tournament.

If West Ham could be a part of this, it would certainly be a great way to grow the club's reputation in North America – even if Moyes is wary of the knock-on effects of such distance trips.

However, all the big clubs seem to travel these days and they seem to do just fine, so it's not as if the Hammers would be the only team to worry about fatigue.

On top of that, Moyes' position with the club seems to be a little bit precarious at the moment due to poor form in the league and so he might not be in the position to argue against the idea with the board right now.

All in all, this certainly looks like one to keep an eye on as it develops ahead of next summer.
