West Ham: David Moyes missed out on Ruslan Malinovskyi

West Ham United were reportedly interested in a late swoop for Atlanta star Ruslan Malinovskyi during the transfer window and the Ukrainian could have been a superb addition to David Moyes’ squad.

According to the Italian media outlet Tutto Atalanta, Malinovskyi was a target for the Hammers, while he was also attracting interest from London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

While Moyes was able to bring in a fellow attacking midfielder in Lucas Paqueta before the transfer window shut, Malinovskyi’s attributes suggest that he could have been an excellent fit in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old has impressed in Serie A in recent seasons, contributing six goals and four assists in the Italian top flight last season, averaging a solid 6.77 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Should West Ham have signed Malinovskyi?

No

The season before saw him register 20 goals and assists combined, so he can clearly pose a huge threat in the final third, and West Ham might regret not bringing him in during the summer.

Had he arrived at the London Stadium, he could have been Moyes’ own version of Liverpool star Diogo Jota.

According to FBref, the Portugal international is the fourth-most similar player to Malinovskyi when compared to forwards in Europe’s big five leagues and European competitions, which suggests that they have similar styles of play.

Indeed, last season saw the two players register very similar numbers in terms of shots per 90 minutes (3.28 vs 3.46), pass completion percentage (73.9 vs 73.7) and goal-creating actions per 90 minutes (0.45 vs 0.53).

This emphasises that both players love to get forward and influence the game in the final third, something which the Hammers have arguably lacked so far this season, with just three goals in their opening six games this season.

How many points did West Ham end the Premier League season with?

Considering Jota’s impressive record last season, where he hit 15 goals and six assists for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the Premier League, West Ham would surely have loved to have a player similar to the former Wolverhampton Wanderers star in their side, and Moyes may well regret not pushing harder to sign the “stunning” midfielder during the summer window.
