West Ham suffer an injury setback with Lukasz Fabianski

West Ham began the new Premier League season with a 2-0 home defeat to Manchester City in which new golden boy Erling Haaland scored an opening day double.

Despite the Hammers’ success last season, the defeat wasn’t exactly a surprise considering the vast riches and spending power of their opponents.

Who did West Ham lose their first league game of the season against?

David Moyes could arguably have no complaints about the match, with one of their hardest fixtures out of the way early doors, the side can build momentum starting with a tie against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Along with the defeat, there was another injury concern for West Ham, with goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski forced off during the first half.

Another injury woe for Moyes

Fabianski collided with Haaland and Aaron Cresswell and Moyes spoke about the keeper’s injury after the match, saying:

“He got a knock onto his hip, which he thinks has numbed his leg completely, so the knock makes me feel not so bad.

“Hopefully, it won’t be anything serious but he’s limping badly at the moment. Hopefully, it’s not maybe as bad as we felt, he had no feeling in his leg after getting the knock.”

This update sounds reassuring, but the manager will still be frustrated, especially considering how many of his backline are currently on the treatment table.

Angelo Ogbonna and Craig Dawson are sidelined, and with new signing Nayef Aguerd sustaining an ankle injury in pre-season against Rangers, it’s a challenging time for Moyes as he looks to find a settled backline.

There are still over three weeks left of the summer transfer window and these setbacks could force the manager into diving back in to sign some defensive cover.

Will West Ham beat Nottingham Forest on Sunday?

The club have been linked with a move for Frenchman Dan-Axel Zagadou, who is available on a free transfer following his release from Borussia Dortmund, and he would offer reliable cover at the heart of defence.

Hopefully, Fabianski will be back available for the side in the coming weeks, although they do have the experience of Alphonse Areola ready to step in.
