West Ham: Nayef Aguerd could return form injury soon

West Ham United manager David Moyes has revealed that summer signing Nayef Aguerd is nearing a return to action following three months on the sidelines.

The defender joined from Rennes for a fee of £30m, however, he injured his ankle in a pre-season clash against Glasgow Rangers and has yet to make a competitive appearance for the club.

However, there might be a chance he could appear against FCSB in the Europa Conference League next month, while the Scot is also looking to get him involved with the Hammers’ U21s side.

Moyes revealed the positive update to Football London, saying: “That would be ideally how he’d do it and the boy wants to do that and we need him to get some feel for the game, we don’t want to shock him by throwing him in.

“I think playing in the Premier League between now and the World Cup may be more difficult, if you are looking at it that way, we will see how it would be.

“If I can get him fit for any part of Silkeborg or any part of [FCSB] that would be great. It might just come a bit quick, the first one certainly, but I’m hoping that maybe these two games are a possibility.

“If I could fit in a [U21s] game from somewhere or somewhere which can get him 45 minutes, I might look to do so.”

This is encouraging news, and the West Ham faithful might get to see Aguerd in action sooner than anticipated.

With the club conceding 17 goals in all competitions this season, having the Moroccan international available would help shore up the backline.

Last season, Aguerd played 31 matches in Ligue 1 for Rennes, averaging an extremely impressive SofaScore rating of 7.05 while helping his side keep ten clean sheets in the top flight of French football.

Who did West Ham lose their first league game of the season against?

He displayed his physical presence by winning 62% of his total duels throughout the campaign, while he was only dribbled past by an opponent an average of 0.3 times per match.

Moyes won’t want to rush the defender back to action and risk aggravating his injury, but it looks increasingly likely that he could be playing in the first team sooner rather than later – something that is undoubtedly great news for everyone involved with the club.
