West Ham United midfielder Freddie Potts could be handed his first appearance of the season against FCSB this evening.

What's the latest?

In a recent post on the official West Ham United website, the club hinted that the 19-year-old - who has made just one first-team appearance for the Hammers to date - could be handed his first senior outing in 2022/23 in the Irons' Europa Conference League dead rubber against FCSB on Thursday night.

In their article, the club wrote: "A year after making his first-team debut as a substitute in a UEFA Europa League tie with Dinamo Zagreb at London Stadium, the midfielder could be in line for his second senior appearance in Thursday's UEFA Europa Conference League Group B tie with FCSB in Romania."

West Ham's next diamond

Considering just how exciting a talent Potts appears to be, should David Moyes place his trust in the young midfielder this evening, the 59-year-old could be rewarded with the unearthing of his next diamond in east London.

Indeed, while it is true that the 19-year-old has had next to no opportunities to impress at senior level, the £225k-rated talent has caught the eye against professional opposition for the U21s in the Papa John's Trophy this term.

Over his 90 minutes on the pitch in the Hammers' 1-0 win over Walsall back in August, Potts enjoyed 63 touches of the ball, completed 39 of his 41 attempted passes - a success rate of 95% - found his man with one long ball and completed one dribble.

The defensively-minded midfielder also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making five tackles, four interceptions, five clearances and winning eight of his ten duels - at a success rate of 80%.

These returns saw the teenager average a stunning SofaScore match rating of 7.6 against the League Two side - with no player from either team earning a higher rating than the youngster.

Potts once again impressed in West Ham's 2-1 victory over Cheltenham Town last month, enjoying 59 touches of the ball, completing 33 of his 41 attempted passes, creating one big chance, making one key pass and finding his man with one cross.

The £1.3k-per-week gem also stood out in a defensive capacity, making four tackles, two interceptions, one clearance and winning six of his ten duels - a success rate of 60%.

These metrics saw the player who Ricky Martin described as a "calm" and "composed" midfielder who "ticks things over nicely and takes it forward when he needs to" - a description that could also easily be applied to Declan Rice - earn yet another excellent SofaScore match rating of 7.4.

As such, with West Ham having already qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa Conference League, it would appear as if Moyes has nothing to lose in unleashing Potts against FCSB this evening - with a positive performance from the 19-year-old potentially being the beginning of his unearthing as the Hammers' next diamond.
