Jesse Lingard has emerged as a major injury doubt for West Ham ahead of their final five games of the season…
According to The Sun’s Duncan Wright, the Irons are growing increasingly concerned that the 28-year-old loan sensation could become the latest big player to face a spell on the treatment table.
It’s claimed that the England international underwent ‘intensive treatment’ last week just to make sure he was fit for their clash with Chelsea snd that he is still being hampered by the problem.
The 28-year-old has left the club doubting his involvement against Burnley on Monday night, especially as he was seen limping at times during the defeat to the Blues at the London Stadium on Saturday.
The Hammers already have several first-team regulars out of action in Declan Rice, Aaron Cresswell, Michail Antonio and Arthur Masuaku, so to lose their leading talisman in attack would be a killer blow towards their European dreams.
Lingard’s impact in East London has been monstrous, to say the least.
He has contributed nine goals and three assists in just 11 appearances to spearhead West Ham into top-four contention. Indeed, no other player has managed better than his 7.46 average WhoScored rating, and he has already equalled top goalscorer Tomas Soucek’s tally in three times as fewer games.
“Jesse is just such a great character and he has just added a lot to West Ham,” explained Rice to the Mirror. “There is no doubt that he is one of the best players in the league right now in terms of form.”
A recall to Gareth Southgate’s England squad during the last international break, albeit fully deserved, handed him an extra workload that he could’ve probably done without, given this run in the side under David Moyes has been his first all campaign.
The Irons are only three points adrift of fourth place and could well push their local rivals, Chelsea, all the way in these final five matches but their chances of doing so are severely hindered without Lingard.
Moyes will surely be hugely concerned, not just going into Monday’s clash with Burnley but ahead of a crucial run-in that could be game-changing for the club.
