West Ham United can add a ‘complete player’ to David Moyes’ squad with the capture of Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic.

What’s the word?

According to The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, West Ham and Southampton are considering forging late window efforts to sign Grujic with his future at Anfield still uncertain following a summer continually linked with moves away from Liverpool.

The Reds have been actively looking to offload the 24-year-old following his return from a two-season loan spell with Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin, however Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League champions are yet to find a potential suitor willing to meet his side’s £20million valuation.

Klopp would consider awarding Grujic a place in his plans should no deal occur in the coming days, but has so far only included his first Liverpool signing in the Reds’ Carabao Cup efforts where he featured for the full affair as they lost on penalties to Arsenal in the Fourth Round on Thursday night.

Grujic has previously attracted interest from both in England and in Germany with multiple outlets citing Borussia Monchengladbach as a keen party who could make an offer, while Hertha were considered to be leading the race for the Serbian’s signature in August as Crystal Palace and Aston Villa also discussed the possibility of a deal.

Neither West Ham nor Southampton are suggested to have contacted Liverpool to discuss the potential of a move approaching Monday’s Deadline Day, or how willing either side would be to meet the Reds’ full valuation.

Would Grujic be worth £20m?

While Grujic has failed to make the grade at Anfield and could leave the Merseyside club having only featured in 16 fixtures over four years, his talents were clear to see during his loan spell in the Bundesliga with Hertha Berlin.

For them, the 8-cap midfielder amassed 54 appearances that featured nine goals and three assists across all competitions, including netting a winning effort against Eintracht Frankfurt, equalisers against 1.FSV Mainz 05 and FC Augsburg that led to victories and in 2-2 draws with Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig.

His match-winning strike against Eintracht also led to widespread praise from the BSC dressing room, with Fabian Lustenberger telling Hertha’s official club website: “Marko has everything.

“Offensive quality, defensive stability, header strength and football elements. You often talk about a complete player and he brings a lot with him to meet all the criteria that you need as a central midfielder.”

Mathew Leckie also added that “Grujic is an important player and our link between offence and defence”, showing how former Hertha teammates considered the 24-year-old during his loan spell in the Bundesliga where he won on average 7.3 duels a game last term.

Per SofaScore, Grujic won 3.9 ground and 3.4 aerial contests each German top-flight appearance in 2019/20, alongside 52.2 touches, 29.6 accurate passes, 1.1 shots, 1.0 successful dribbles and 0.4 key balls.

If West Ham are interested in Grujic, Moyes will need to see the ownership act fast otherwise risk the ‘complete player’ heading back to Germany in the coming days.
