West Ham can form deadly duo by signing Ben Brereton Diaz

West Ham United are plotting a move to sign Blackburn Rovers forward Ben Brereton Diaz to add to their strikeforce after agreeing a deal for Gianluca Scamacca.

What’s the story?

According to a report in The Sun, the Hammers are weighing up a move for Diaz to add even more reinforcements up top, as they close in on confirming Scamacca’s arrival from Serie A side Sassuolo.

They have been tracking the Chilean for a while and recently sent scouts to watch him in Blackburn’s pre-season friendly against Lincoln City on Saturday.

The report claims the forward would be available for a figure of £15m this summer, while it is also said that the east London outfit will face competition from fellow Premier League sides Leeds United and Bournemouth.

For the past 18 months manager David Moyes has been consistently reliant on Michail Antonio to lead the line, and whilst he’s produced some top performances, backup is definitely needed.

Can form a deadly duo with Scamacca

West Ham have really been stepping up their efforts to make signings over the past few weeks and recently agreed a £30.5m fee with Sassuolo for highly-rated striker Scamacca.

If the deal goes through as expected, then bringing in Diaz too could see them lead the line as a deadly duo for the Hammers next season.

Should West Ham sign Diaz?

Whilst Scamacca has operated largely as a 9 for the Italian club, Diaz has the ability to play off the left so they could fit in nicely together for Moyes’ side.

Over 37 Championship fixturs last season, Diaz scored an impressive 22 goals and registered three assists. That kind of form hasn’t gone unnoticed and it seems it won’t be too long before we see the 23-year-old in the top flight.

His talent has been described as “sensational” by journalist Josh Bunting and it’s hard to disagree.

How many points did West Ham end the Premier League season with?

Blackburn just missed out on the play-offs last season – finishing eighth – and Diaz sticking around will give them a much better chance at getting promoted next year, but with the player only having 12 months left on his contract they face a big dilemma.

He’s better than the level they’re at so it’d be surprising if he agreed a new deal, meaning the most financially viable thing for them to do is cash in this summer.

With only a few months separating Diaz and Scamacca in age, West Ham could find themselves with a strikeforce that they are able to rely on for years to come, with both being ideal long-term replacements for Antonio.
