West Ham: Alba could form deadly partnership with Benrahma

West Ham are reportedly considering a move for Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba and the Spaniard could form a deadly partnership with Said Benrahma in David Moyes’ side.

According to reports in Spain, via Sport Witness, the Irons are looking to sign the 33-year-old, with the La Liga giants more than willing to consider offers as they look to get the £349k-per-week defender off the wage bill, as they continue to struggle financially.

Although he is arguably past his peak, the Spain international is still a regular in Xavi’s Barcelona side, having made ten appearances in La Liga so far this season, averaging a strong 6.95 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

Earlier this year, international teammate Dani Carvajal described him as “one of the best“, which suggests that he still has what it takes to be a success in the Premier League.

He also seems likely to be a starter for Luis Enrique’s side at the World Cup in Qatar, where Spain will be looking to go far after falling at the semi-final stage of the Euros last year.

Would Alba be a good signing?

Alba boasts a wealth of experience on both the domestic and international stage, having won the Champions League once and La Liga five times during his time at the Nou Camp, as well as the Euros in 2012 when he burst onto the scene with a memorable goal in the 4-0 final thrashing of Italy.

Should he make the move to the London Stadium, on what would admittedly be a short-term deal, he would surely start ahead of Aaron Cresswell at left-back, given his stature as one of the best left-backs in the world over the past decade.

When was the last time West Ham had an England player go to a World Cup?

He would therefore look to provide an attacking threat down the left-hand side with Benrahma, who was just starting to hit form in Moyes’ side before the enforced break, despite the Hammers’ poor form overall.

The Algerian winger impressed in games against Manchester United, Bournemouth and Crystal Palace, scoring twice in those three outings, so will be looking to pick up where he left off once the Premier League resumes.

WhoScored suggests that both Alba and Benrahma excel at holding onto the ball, and their excellent technical ability could see them combine to a devastating effect in Moyes’ side.
