West Ham must avoid former Manuel Pellegrini transfer target Domagoj Vida

According to Turkish outlet Takvim, West Ham have reignited their interest in Besiktas centre-back Domagoj Vida.

What’s the word?

The Hammers were first linked with a move for the Croatia international back in the summer of 2018 when Manuel Pellegrini had just taken over, but a deal failed to materialise before the end of the transfer deadline.

Who won the Premier League Golden Boot the 2009/10 season?

Now, Takvim claim David Moyes’ side are plotting a €5m (£4.5m) move for the vastly experienced 31-year-old, and that Besiktas are finally prepared to open the door for the defender to leave in this summer window.

GSB heading for disaster

To go from making a big-money move for Burnley and England centre-back James Tarkowski, who at 27 is arguably in the peak years of his career, to a bargain basement deal for Vida, smacks of GSB simply trying to penny-pinch.

Should West Ham go back in for Domagoj Vida?

Whilst Vida has got bags of experience – he has 81 caps for Croatia and played Champions League football – there are no guarantees he would be a success on these shores. Earning around £70k-a-week, the 31-year-old would be a major gamble for the Hammers both financially and in terms of what he could offer on the pitch.

Vida’s a tough-tackling and tenacious defender, but that aggression can often spill over, and it’s no surprise that he’s picked up 81 yellow cards during his career. And that’s not to mention the kinds of trouble he has caused with FIFA during the World Cup back in 2018. The Croatian is a hot-head who West Ham could quite frankly do without.
