Speaking exclusively to FootballFanCast, former West Ham striker Neil Mellor has admitted his former side should have signed Callum Wilson in this summer transfer window.

The Hammers have endured a difficult few weeks in the transfer market, with a lack of incomings compounded by the fact they sold one of their rising talents in Grady Diangana to newly-promoted West Brom.

And whilst David Moyes' side have been linked with a whole host of players, Mellor picked out one name in particular that the club should have targeted.

When asked which new Premier League signing the Hammers should have brought in themselves, he said: "Callum Wilson. I think he's a great signing for Newcastle. West Ham, whilst they conceded a lot of goals last season, the top scorer was Antonio who had ten and had a great end to the season.

"Haller was injured for spells. I just feel someone like Callum Wilson, who's proven at the top level could have given them something extra in the final third."

After being part of a Bournemouth side that were relegated on the final day of last season, it was no surprise to see Wilson make his exit from the Vitality Stadium.

He cost the Magpies £20m and has signed on a four-year contract.

West Ham saw last summer's club record signing in Haller fail to hit the ground running, notching just seven goals all season, and a more Premier League proven number nine would certainly have gone down well.

And just to emphasise that point, Wilson of course scored against the Hammers in their opening Premier League game of the season, when he netted in a 2-0 win for Newcastle.

Unless Haller showcases his true potential in the top-flight sooner rather than later, letting Wilson join a team that they could potentially be battling come the end of the season, may be something they come to regret.
