West Ham: David Moyes pushing for Conor Gallagher deal

West Ham United are interested in a deal to bring Conor Gallagher to the London Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by ExWHUemployee, who revealed in a recent post on The West Ham Way (via West Ham Zone) that David Moyes’ side are in talks with Chelsea in an attempt to bring the 22-year-old central midfielder to east London on a season-long loan – although the Hammers’ advances for the England international have so far been rejected by the Blues.

In his post, the Irons insider said: “Talks will also continue with Chelsea. The main priority is to try and get Conor Gallagher on loan although these advances have been rejected a number of times.”

Considering just how impressive Gallagher was on a temporary spell with Crystal Palace last season, the argument that the box-to-box midfielder would be an unreal signing for Moyes to get over the line this summer is an easy one to make.

Indeed, over his 34 Premier League appearances for Patrick Vieira’s side in 2021/22, the £22.5m-rated talent proved a continuous threat in the opposition third, scoring eight goals, registering three assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.5 shots, making 1.1 key passes and completing 1.3 dribbles per game.

The £32k-per-week dynamo also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, making an average of 2.0 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 25.1 passes and winning 5.9 duels per fixture.

Overall, the player who Rahman Osman dubbed “unreal” averaged an extremely impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.08, a rating that would have seen the 22-year-old rank as the Hammers’ second-best performer in the top flight last season – behind only Declan Rice.

To put his returns into perspective, over Rice’s own 36 Premier League outings last season, the 23-year-old scored one goal, provided four assists and created two big chances, as well as made an average of 2.2 tackles, 1.8 interceptions, 54.8 passes and won 5.1 duels per outing.

How many points did West Ham end the Premier League season with?

As such, with Rice evidently being more adept than Gallagher in a defensive capacity, and the Chelsea starlet looking to be more dangerous going forward than Rice – although both players are also impressive in their weaker traits – the prospect of the duo lining up alongside each other at the London Stadium is certainly an exciting one.

However, with Chelsea not looking to be playing ball over a deal for the 22-year-old who Tom Dutton labelled both “irreplaceable” and a “monster,” it would appear as if Moyes will have his work cut out if he is to make this dream a reality prior to September’s transfer deadline.
