ExWHUemployee has dropped an update on West Ham United's pursuit of Jesse Lingard in the January transfer window.

What's the latest?

In a recent post on The West Ham Way, the Irons insider revealed that David Moyes' side have made a fresh offer to Manchester United for the 29-year-old, however, with Ralf Rangnick's side still viewing West Ham as a rival for a top-four place this season, a deal for the attacking midfielder is unlikely to be done today.

In his post, Ex said: "As reported, the club have gone back in for Lingard with an improved offer. Surprisingly, it seems to have not been completely knocked back. We will keep you up to date with how this progresses...

"Update: It's all down to Man United's board to accept the deal. They have always seen us as a rival so whether they will change their mind is unlikely. Lingard is open to the move - should it get accepted - now he knows that he doesn't feature in the new manager's plans - this has changed his mind [about a move]. Newcastle United are Manchester United's preferred choice of destination."

Fans will be livid

With West Ham and Jesse Lingard's transfer saga having been ongoing for the best part of a year now, the news that the 29-year-old has finally been given the green light to leave Old Trafford, coupled with Ex's update suggesting that United will not let the England international move to East London, is sure to have left fans livid.

Indeed, with it looking increasingly unlikely that David Moyes will be landing his priority position of a new centre-forward prior to Monday evening's transfer deadline, the signing of a versatile forward such as Lingard would have somewhat softened the blow of missing out on an out and out striker.

However, with a move for the £80k-per-week forward also now looking to be off the table, Moyes and his transfer team are entering the final stages of the January transfer window having made no new additions to their playing squad - something that, if nothing changes in the next few hours, could have disastrous consequences on the Hammers' top-four hopes this season.
