West Ham: Moyes can forget about Keane by signing Szalai

West Ham United manager David Moyes is reportedly interested in signing Michael Keane for the club in order to bolster his backline.

That’s according to Football Insider, who revealed last month that the Scot was keeping tabs on Keane having failed with a move in the summer, but it’s hardly a signing that would generate excitement at the London Stadium.

The Englishman has played just 22 minutes of Premier League football so far this season, being kept out of the Everton side by Conor Coady and James Tarkowski, and Moyes should be targeting someone who could have an immediate impact.

And, West Ham could seal an upgrade by moving for defender Attila Szalai instead, with the club recently linked with a move for the Hungarian.

A move for the Fenerbahce player might cost Moyes around €20m (£17m), but it could prove to be excellent value.

The 24-year-old is an imposing figure at the heart of the Turkish side’s defence and was even dubbed as “exemplary” by Emre Belözoğlu, and should be well known to English supporters, with the player starring in Hungary’s 4-0 win over Gareth Southgate’s men back in June.

On that occasion, he made three clearances, one interception and one tackle while taking 39 touches as he managed to fend off the English front three of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Jarrod Bowen.

His form for the Turkish side this season has been impressive, helping his side keep seven clean sheets and averaging 1.0 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 1.8 clearances per match. Szalai also uses his towering 6-foot-4 frame to wonderful effect, winning 69% of his aerials duels across 13 league matches this season.

When was the last time West Ham had an England player go to a World Cup?

The defender is five years younger than Keane and could become a mainstay at the heart of the West Ham defence for years to come.

Keane, on the other hand, would more than likely be a stopgap signing, and with just 22 minutes of Premier League action so far, he would take a while to get up to match fitness. Will Moyes make the logical move and sign Szalai? Only time will tell.
