West Ham: Fabrizio Romano drops Lazaro update

Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update on reported West Ham United transfer target Lazaro.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by CaughtOffside, the Italian journalist revealed that, after David Moyes reportedly saw a £6m offer for the Flamengo attacking midfielder knocked back by the Serie A side, it will likely cost the Hammers a figure in the region of £10-12m in order to prise the 20-year-old away from the Maracana this summer.

Regarding West Ham’s interest in the former Brazil U17 international, Romano said: “Lazaro is a very interesting talent and I’m not surprised to see growing interest in the player.

“So far, West Ham offered £6m with a verbal proposal but Flamengo immediately refused because they want more, and are waiting for proposals from other clubs, including Belgian teams. I believe £10-12m will be needed to get a deal done for Lazaro this summer.”

Impressive coup

Considering just how exciting a prospect Lazaro quite clearly is, in addition to the fact that David Moyes is in rather desperate need of an injection of goals and creativity into his West Ham attack, it is easy to see why the 59-year-old would be interested in a deal to bring the Brazilian playmaker to the London Stadium this summer.

Indeed, over his 20 Serie A appearances – only nine of which have come as starts – so far this season, the £6.3m-rated talent has returned some extremely eye-catching numbers, scoring four goals, registering two assists and creating two big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.5 shots, making 0.6 key passes and completing 0.9 dribbles per game.

How many points did West Ham end the Premier League season with?

The versatile forward – who can operate from attacking midfield, on either wing and even as a centre-forward – has also impressed over his seven fixtures – only one of which has come from the off – in this season’s Copa Libertadores, bagging one goal, providing two assists and creating two big chances, in addition to taking an average of 1.3 shots, making 0.7 key passes and completing 0.6 dribbles per outing.

These returns have seen the 20-year-old who Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig compared to Marco Reus – as well as listed Lazaro’s strengths as his “pace, dribbling, finishing, movement, technique, ball control and creativity” – average a quite remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.08 – an astonishing feat considering his limited starts in the competition.

As such, with Lazaro quite clearly being an energetic, composed and creative attacking midfielder, it would indeed appear as if the addition of the former Brazilian youth international would be an incredibly impressive one for West Ham – particularly considering the fact the Hammers are the only side in the Premier League yet to hit the back of the net in 2022/23.
