West Ham United are amongst the clubs interested in signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez in the summer with the Englishman set to push for a move out of Anfield.

What's the story?

According to 90min, Gomez is keen to leave Liverpool this summer after a lack of game time this season and is subject to interest from a handful of Premier League clubs, including West Ham.

The Hammers won't have centre-back Angelo Ogbonna fit until the start of next season at the earliest after the Italian sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Liverpool in November.

Manager David Moyes currently favours a partnership of Kurt Zouma and Craig Dawson with Issa Diop on the bench, but will certainly be keen to strengthen his options at the back in the coming transfer window.

West Ham must sign Gomez

Despite still occupying a place in the top-six, the Irons could certainly do with reinforcements in defence and Gomez would be an excellent addition.

The 24-year-old has certainly been unlucky at Anfield after missing the majority of last season with a serious knee injury off the back of an excellent campaign as Liverpool won their first Premier League title.

The Englishman made 43 appearances across all competitions in 2019/20 and was very much in England manager Gareth Southgate's plans.

However, this season has been a real disappointment for the 11-cap defender, who will have this year's World Cup on his mind.

Gomez has amounted to just over 100 minutes of league football all season with the likes of Virgil Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip above the Englishman in the pecking order.

Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, Gomez could prove to be a bargain purchase for the East London club with the defender still having two years remaining on his Liverpool contract.

Although they're sixth in the league, West Ham have kept just seven clean sheets in 28 Premier League matches so far this term, conceding 35 goals.

Last summer's £29.8m purchase of Kurt Zouma from Chelsea has proven to be a good deal, despite the controversy surrounding the Frenchman off of the pitch, and the Hammers could replicate that deal by adding Gomez to their ranks.

In the Premier League, Zouma is averaging an 84% pass success rate as well as 1.6 interceptions and 0.7 tackles per game as well as 5.8 clearances.

As for Gomez, the Englishman's passing was better in 2019/20 at 88% as he also averaged 1.4 interceptions, 0.8 tackles and 2.1 clearances as well as keeping 12 clean sheets.

That season saw the defender receive plenty of praise from manager Jurgen Klopp, who said in January 2020: “Since he is playing as a centre-half again – his natural position – together with Virg [il Van Dijk] there is exceptional. He is a sensational footballer, which is good.

“He has outstanding speed, which helps us a lot to keep our last line high; he is a really good challenger; good in one-on-one situations; football-wise, I said already, good."

The 24-year-old would certainly be a shrewd addition to Moyes' squad, however, West Ham will have to fend off interest from numerous Premier League rivals if they are to land the defender's signature in the summer.
