West Ham United are believed to be interested in a move for AZ Alkmaar defender Owen Wijndal, as manager David Moyes plots further summer additions.

What's the word?

As per 90min's Toby Cudworth, the Hammers have "enquired" about a deal for the 22-year-old - who could reportedly cost in the region of €10m (£9m) - with talks having hit a stumbling block regarding a possible switch to Eredivisie champions, Ajax.

Writing on Twitter about the east London outfit's interest in the Dutchman, the journalist stated: "#WHUFC have indeed enquired about Owen Wijndal. Ajax have agreed terms with AZ but the move has stalled over personal terms - chance for WHam & others to see if a deal can be done."

In the attached piece, the report suggests there is an 'appetite' for a new addition at left-back, having already wrapped up deals for Rennes defender Nayef Aguerd and goalkeeper Alphonse Areola - who spent last season on loan at the London Stadium from Paris Saint-Germain.

That said, unless a dramatic U-turn takes place, the player could well be on his way to Ajax with fresh reports stating a move has even been completed. However, until an official announcement comes from the Dutch giants, there is still time for the Irons.

Huge upgrade

Young, Dutch left-backs seem to be hot property this summer, with Manchester United believed to be chasing Feyenoord starlet Tyrell Malacia, while the Irons make moves for the man above.

By his own admission, it is the Alkmaar man who is the "best left-back in the Netherlands" however, with the £10.8m-rated gem seemingly not short of confidence when it comes to his own skillset.

That claim is not without merit, however, as his form of late has illustrated just what a talent the £4.8k-per-week defender is, having chipped in with one goal and ten assists in 31 league games last term - all of which came as starts.

Despite his youth, the "dangerous" prospect - as dubbed by Ajax Analytics - has already racked up 142 games in all competitions for the Dutch outfit since making his debut back in 2017, notably chipping in with four goals and 27 assists in that time.

By contrast, current Hammers man and first-choice full-back Aaron Cresswell has only provided seven more assists than that of Wijndal during his eight-year stay with the Irons, despite having amassed 292 appearances across all fronts in that time.

The most recent campaign saw the 32-year-old register an impressive seven assists in total, although on the European stage he was culpable for what proved to be costly errors, notably receiving a straight red card in the second-leg, semi-final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Equally, current understudy Arthur Masuaku has also failed to really make his mark during his six-year stint with the club, the 28-year-old registering a measly tally of two goals and just ten assists in 127 appearances - a poor return for an 'attacking' asset.

A young, hungry upgrade is perhaps what is needed this summer, with Wijndal offering the perfect long-term solution on the left of the defence.
