The GSB era at West Ham United has been 'blessed' with a catalogue of infamous and at times bizarre centre-forward signings, with the club seemingly possessing an inability to recruit a number nine that won't go on to underwhelm.

That trend appears set to continue if the latest reports are to be believed, with the Hammers reportedly admirers of mercurial Paris Saint-Germain striker, Mauro Icardi, with the Ligue 1 side said to be keen to cash in on their failing asset.

The Argentine international was signed permanently by the Parisien outfit on a £45m deal in 2020 after an initial loan move from Inter Milan, having suffered an acrimonious exit from the San Siro.

Controversy has again plagued the 29-year-old at the Parc des Princes, while his on-field form has seen him struggle to justify that substantial price tag, notably making just ten league starts under compatriot Mauricio Pochettino last term.

While his current tally for the club stands at a respectable 38 goals and ten assists in 92 games, that haul appears far less impressive considering his current side's continued dominance in the French top-flight, with the standard of competition far below that of the Premier League.

Once described as an "animal" by former coach Stefano Pioli, the one-time Inter skipper had been prolific during his time in Milan - netting 124 goals in 219 games across all fronts for the Nerazzurri - although that appears something of a distant memory, with it hard to see a move to the London Stadium being anything other than an expensive mistake.

Such a move could potentially mirror that of another striker who had previously thrived in Italy prior to a move to east London in Simone Zaza, with the 18-cap international's dismal and brief stint perhaps something of a warning sign for Moyes and co in their potential Icardi pursuit.

Unfazed by the then Juventus man's horror penalty miss at Euro 2016, the Irons made the bold decision secure the 6 foot 1 marksman on a £5m loan deal later that summer, with the agreement including a potential £20m purchase option that would be triggered once a certain number of appearances were met.

As it proved, the one-time Sassuolo man never lasted long enough for that clause to be activated, eventually making just 11 appearances before the club opted to sever ties, failing to register a single goal in his 571 minutes of competitive action.

The Italian's father subsequently admitted it had been a "huge mistake" for the forward to join the Premier League side, with the player himself also suggesting that he was "not right mentally" during that ill-fated stint.

While that signing came during Slaven Bilic's tenure, Moyes will not want to make the same mistake as the Croatian by landing another big name who has no experience of playing in England, like Icardi.

The former Manchester United boss would no doubt have concerns over the £157k-per-week striker's commitment to the cause and his character, with French legend Jean-Pierre Papin stating of the PSG man that he has "great doubts about his personality".

That will set alarm bells ringing at the east London outfit, with Moyes and co needing to avoid a Zaza repeat by shunning any potential move.
