It’s pretty safe to say that the Latics are simply not among the biggest spenders currently playing their football in the Championship. Even prior to their relegation down a tier in English football, they were quite contained out in the market for the majority of the time.
It is also quite telling that the biggest signing in the history of the club arrived back in 2006/07 when they signed Emile Heskey from Birmingham City for a reported fee of £6.7m. Fast forward about 15 years in the future, and that record is still intact!
They did, however, come pretty close to it just a year later with the transfer of Jason Koumas from West Bromwich Albion for a sum of £6.2m, which is still their second biggest purchase to date. Henri Camara’s £5.8m price tag rounds off the top three for the Latics and none of the recent arrivals can come close to the figures that were splashed all those years ago.
The situation is somewhat better when it comes to departures, though. Antonio Valencia’s big-money move to Manchester United in 2009/10 made Wigan Athletic a total of £16.9m and that’s still their biggest piece of business they’ve ever done – both incoming and outgoing.
Valencia is then closely followed by James McCarthy’s departure to Everton in 2013/14 for £13.7m and Wilson Palacios’ £13.5m move to Tottenham Hotspur in 2008/09 as the second and third-biggest sales respectively.
There have been some big names donning their colours over the years and many transfers that ruffled a few feathers, either by moving into the club or departing it. Of course, Heskey should be close to the top of that list as his price tag is still unmatched all those years later.
Valencia is also someone who definitely warrants a shout for a similar reason, only he moved in the opposite direction, leaving the club for a record fee. And then we have the likes of Charles N’Zogbia, who joined from Newcastle back in 2009, or Victor Moses who arrived from Crystal Palace shortly after.
Palacios is also someone who could get in with a shout and so could possibly Callum McManaman who made some great plays during his two stints with the Baggies. Of course, both players were moved on for decent figures but they can still be included on the list.
